Deborah discovered that St. Mary's has installed an Arrow of Peace on International Peace Day since 2007 and that it is used weekly at 1 p.m., so we decided that the afternoon before Deborah's lecture would be a wonderful opportunity to rededicate it. More than fifty students attended the beautiful re-dedication ceremony of the Peace Pool, where Prof. McGraw was warmly welcomed, Brother Michael made a deep and moving interfaith invocation, and the Rev. Dr. John R. Dolan, Archbishop of San Francisco, with his wife Sister Mary Ann, participated in a beautiful "re-dedication ceremony" for the Peace Pool.
The Peace Pole of St. Mary's Peace radiates a prayer for peace and social justice on an idyllic campus that prepares students to be caring citizens of the world's diversity. Let us therefore say this prayer together: "May peace on earth prevail." And if this word does not come to pass, five powerful words are inscribed on the newly inaugurated Pool of Peace, which will be inaugurated this afternoon and for years to come. We began with a meditation and ended with the phrase: "May Peace Prevail on Earth," three times, processed through the words of Saint John R. Dolan, Archbishop of San Francisco, and his wife, Sister Mary Ann.
We handed out flags of the United States of America and then made inspiring remarks about the importance of regular interreligious dialogue. President Donahue of St. Mary's turned up unexpectedly at an old friend's house and we were all invited to make inspiring remarks. Fumi spoke affectionately about what it was like to be a student and see her first pole of peace.
